In The Kitchen With Elloise

In Hospitality today we made our most challenging meal yet... if we didn't put an ingredient in, it would fail! If we let it cook for too long, it would fail! If we didn't keep our eyes on it all the time, it would fail! Today, we made PIKELETS!!!...which also happened to be extremely delicious. Here is how to make them:

  • Firstly you had to sift self-raising flour into a large bowl and consistently stir.
  • Next, you had to combine buttermilk, egg, syrup and melted butter and whisk into the flour mixture until smooth. (That is why it is good to have two people cooking, so one can consistently stir whist the other is putting the mixtures into the bowl).
  • While the mixture/batter was sitting, someone had to heat an electric frypan and spray it lightly with cooking oil.
  • Then came the hard and crucial part - cooking! You had to pour a 1/4 cup of the batter at a time onto the pan and leave room for spreading. Doing this you should be able to cook 4 at once.
  • When bubbles started to appear on the surface of the pikelet you had to carefully turn them over - being carful not to tear or drop them off the spatula. Then cook them for a further 2-3 minutes or until brown.
  • Lastly, you had to serve them with extra maple syrup and any extras e.g. lemon/lime wedges or mint leaves.
If I were to change anything, I would make sure to be more careful around the electric frypan as I accidentally burnt my thumb and I also wouldn't put too much maple syrup on the pikelets when serving.

This was a wonderful experience and I would love to do it again.
